Post 4; Chapter 6

In chapter 6 a reporter goes Gatsby's mansion to interview him about the rumors and to see if they're actually true. We learn about Gatsby's early life and Nick's relation to the stop. The reporter finds out that Gatsby's real name is James Gatz and he was born in North Dakota on a farm. He went to St. Olaf's in Minnesota for college and dropped out after two weeks. He got his name Jay Gatsby by a 50 year old man named Dan Cody. He made Gatsby his assistant. Gatsby fell in love with wealth and luxury after traveling to the Barbary Coast and the West Indies with Dan. Dan was a heavy drinker and one of Gatsby's jobs was to look after him when he was drunk. A woman came on board one night in Boston and a week later Dan died. When he died he left Gatsby a lot of money but he couldn't get it all because of his mistress. This all made Gatsby want to become wealthy and be a successful man.
The details about Gatsby's early life are different from the rumors about him. The rumors made him look like a mysterious and devious man who may have killed someone, when in fact he was just a normal person who worked hard to get where he is.
Gatsby changed his name to jay Gatsby because he didn't want to remember the person he was in his past and he wanted to become a new person. He wanted to be known as a wealthy and respected man and wanted a name to represent that. Gatz was a poor man and wasn't popular, while Gatsby is very wealthy and is widely known.
Tom doesn't like Gatsby, he acts as if he has something against him. Tom thinks that Gatsby should be looked down upon for the way he earned his wealth. He's also jealous of the relationship Gatsby and Daisy have, because he wants her to himself.
