Post 5; chapter 7

Dear Diary.
Gatsby and I couldn't see what was happening, it all happened so fast, i just heard a loud bang and kept on going, i was afraid to find out what i ran over. I can't really remember anything from that drive i zoned out because i was so shooken up from just happened. When i got home i ran to my room and tried to think about what had happened. Gatsby said that he was going to take the blame. It could ruin his life, his reputation and everything that he worked so hard for. I think Tom is starting to realize the relationship Gatsby and I have, all because Gatsby can't seem to hide his feeling for me. I care for Tom, but I love Gatsby. I just don't know what to do. Sometimes I feel like I don't know the man that I married. I wonder sometimes, what his reason is against nice people. Why does he treat people so cruel? I think the reason I have such strong feelings for Gatsby is because he cares about me and protects me like I'm the only person he's worried about. I couldn't let him take the blame for something that I did because he's always so quick to do things for me.

Post 4; Chapter 6

In chapter 6 a reporter goes Gatsby's mansion to interview him about the rumors and to see if they're actually true. We learn about Gatsby's early life and Nick's relation to the stop. The reporter finds out that Gatsby's real name is James Gatz and he was born in North Dakota on a farm. He went to St. Olaf's in Minnesota for college and dropped out after two weeks. He got his name Jay Gatsby by a 50 year old man named Dan Cody. He made Gatsby his assistant. Gatsby fell in love with wealth and luxury after traveling to the Barbary Coast and the West Indies with Dan. Dan was a heavy drinker and one of Gatsby's jobs was to look after him when he was drunk. A woman came on board one night in Boston and a week later Dan died. When he died he left Gatsby a lot of money but he couldn't get it all because of his mistress. This all made Gatsby want to become wealthy and be a successful man.
The details about Gatsby's early life are different from the rumors about him. The rumors made him look like a mysterious and devious man who may have killed someone, when in fact he was just a normal person who worked hard to get where he is.
Gatsby changed his name to jay Gatsby because he didn't want to remember the person he was in his past and he wanted to become a new person. He wanted to be known as a wealthy and respected man and wanted a name to represent that. Gatz was a poor man and wasn't popular, while Gatsby is very wealthy and is widely known.
Tom doesn't like Gatsby, he acts as if he has something against him. Tom thinks that Gatsby should be looked down upon for the way he earned his wealth. He's also jealous of the relationship Gatsby and Daisy have, because he wants her to himself.

Post 1; Gatsby Chapter 1

Why did Nick move to the East?
Why doesn't Daisy want to show off her baby?
What plans does Daisy have for Nick and Jordyn?
What is Nick's relationship with Daisy? Characterize Daisy.
What is the difference between East Egg and West Egg?
Why did the mood change when the phone rang?
What makes Gatsby so mysterious?
I find it interesting how they separate people by wealth as if that is the most important thing in the world. The people in the West Egg have recently became rich so they don't have the social connections to move to the East Egg. Nick lives in a modest house which is right next door to Gatsby's mansion. Nick, on the other hand, lives in West Egg but has many connections in East Egg and has graduated from Yale so he drives to East Egg and has dinner with his cousin Daisy and her husband, Tom, who he knows from Yale . My opinions on the characters are that Tom is a liar and cheater and that Daisy knows that and doesn't actually love him. Nick doesn't really belong where he is but he doesn't mind.

Post 2; chapter 2: The Great Gatsby

1. The Valley of Ashes is a place where NYC dumps all of their from businesses and it is characterized as a desolate place. It's symbolic because there is a difference in the standard of living because people were separated by wealth. The way it's characterized makes it appear to be an unlivable place. T.J. Eckleburg is an eye doctor who wants everyone to have him as their eye doctor, so he put up a billboard on the highway by the Valley of Ashes where he knows a lot of people will see it.

2. Wilson is a man whom has blonde hair and blue eyes and runs a car dealership is characterized as a man with a lifeless personality. Wilson is waiting for a car that Tom is supposed to give him but Tom had it taken to get fixed and Wilson tries to say something to him but Tom treats Wilson like he's not important. Nick doesn't like the way Tom's behavior is toward other people. Tom thinks that he is better than everyone.

3. Tom giving Myrtle the dog symbolizes that he treats her like she needs him, as a dog would. He looks at her as if she was a child and he doesn't value her as a person.

4. Nick is drunk during the whole party. Some details are;

  • Myrtles sister, Catherine, and Mr. McKee arrives along with other guests
  • Myrtles changes to be more dramatic
  • Catherine was the only one not drinking
  • Myrtle tells Nick about how she met Tom
  • Nick and Mr. McKee leave together
  • Catherine tells Nick that her sister cant stand her husband. She married him because he was a gentleman and she knows it was a mistake
  • Nick wakes up with Mr. McKee in his bed and goes to the train station to wait for the 4 o'clock train
  • Tom punches Myrtle because she won't stop talking about Daisy and he doesn't when she says her name.
5. The purpose of chapter 2 is to introduce the characters and characterize them and she the relationships between all of them. It shows who Tom really is as a person and how he met Myrtle. He's a liar and cheater and looks down on others. It also shows that Nick doesn't like Tom because he doesn't think he is a good person. Nick is easily taken advantage of because of what happens at the party.
